A 1981 Vanagon and the Fame M-22 Journey

What an epic holiday weekend in Northern Michigan; one of the most underrated places in the United States. With dense green forestry, and the most beautiful beaches with brilliant shades of blue lakes, Ken and I explored hundreds of miles of Michigan’s shoreline. We attacked Michigan’s fame M-22 to discover what all the hype is about. Honestly, just checkin’ to see if all the M-22 bumper stickers and T-shirts are worth their markings.

For the next four days, I will walk you through and show you a few of our photos and videos of our van’s inaugural trip up the coast of Northern Michigan. But first, let me tell you a little bit about our new ride; the VDub Van.

After selling the 2002 Volkswagon Eurovan we felt the void of a vehicle that could keep up with  our adventures lives, so we began searching online for our next van. We found this beast on ebay in Washington and within a week we had this new / old van shipped to us. It’s a 1981 Volkswagon Vanagon, Westfalia edition. This old, but classic utilitarian vehicle, is a adventure seekers dream to hold memories and showcase freedom in every sense of the word. With a pop-up top and drop bed, it’s hard to believe this van sleeps 4. There is a full kitchen unit inside with a mini-fridge, sink and 2 stove top burners. This van is equipped with plenty of storage that can keep all of our belongings safe and secure in the finest compartments to keep the van clean and tidy and avoid the chaos of things rolling around while driving. The van is only a 4-speed and doesn't pass 65 miles per hour - it is the ultimate beach cruiser and the perfect transport to help us enjoy the journey.

Everywhere we went this weekend people would honk, high five, thumbs up, take photos and ask to see the inside of the van because of how unique it is. We received the much deserved ‘street cred’ and had a totally out of the norm trip in and out of our Vanagon.

It’s hard to miss the one of a kind ‘Happiness Hunting’ Bumper sticker on the van which goes back to the blog, Artisan Happiness; and our quest to find ultimate happiness in our simple adventures and our way of life. Seeking the most unforgettable memories over the materialistic things; we truly are Happiness Hunting.
